Painting Armies in Tin

Painting progress

19 Feb 2009

So I first tested my intended colours on a figure I obtained with a set of plastic terrain from someone. Altough the face tutorial in the latest White Dwarf was very helpful the green did not result in what I was looking for.

 Luitenant

The Space Marine is more what I had in mind. Altough the black wash in the end will be replaced with a more brown one to get a slightly lighter result.

 Space Marine

The dreadnought is spot on as to colour and look. I am especially pleased with the close combat weapon, which is not very evident on the picture I took.

 Dreadnought

Of course you have all noticed that the bases need to be painted and finished, something I will do when all figures are ready so the whole army has consistent basing.

Salamanders Update

2 Feb 2009

Today, I finished the basing groundwork on all figures. On the larger bases (Deff Kopta, Dreadnought and Terminators) I used some wallfiller with Talus rocks on top. On the other bases I only used coarse sand glued with thinned wood glue. This needs to dry rock hard (wood glue takes care of that), after which I can start with the black undercoat. For the undercoat I will be using Humbrol Matt Black (only the pigment and thinned with white spirit) brushed on with a large soft brush. Hopefully The basecoat will be finished at the end of the week. Also I figured out a colorscheme that is loosely based on the one of Necron figure I painted some time ago:

Some stuff will be altered and of course being Space Marines they will have numerous battle honours and seals to give the scheme some more color. Next week I hope to be able to show the testfigure I have painted.

Update report on Black Reach

25 Jan 2009

Forces are starting to gather. At the moment all mini's are glued, cleaned and drying as I speak (well write actually), from the last filling with Wood Glue. (A method someone onces told me about, just mail if you need the secret).

To be honest, altough the price is pretty steep at €60,= you do actually get a bunch of very nice models, with a lot of detail. Altough every single mini needs to be cleaned (sprue lines), which is probably the way forward in modelgaming, it does have advantages. Just take a minidrill and he presto the guns do actually have something resembling a barrel. This goes double for the exhaust on the Deff Koptas and household appliances the Orks are using as close combat weapon.

Hopefully I will be able to finish all basing (that is rocks, sand and some filler here and there) so this can dry thoroughly. This will also add some weight to the plastic mini's which for some idiotic reason have been my main reason for not buying any. I have abandoned my plan to add Litko basing at the moment. Altough this does at weight and the advantage of instant magnetic basing I...

WH40K

24 Jan 2009

Since 2 weeks I am the owner of the WH40K starter box "Assault on Black Reach" the Dutch version.

The reason being mainly that there is currently a large group of people in a town near mine that is actively playing both WH40K and WFB. Since the nearest wargames club is on the other side of the country I decided to start a couple of armies for both systems. Since my son is very interested in things robot and high tech stuff I will build him a Necron Army, but for now he will have to do with either the Space Marines or Orks from the boxed set. For Warhammer Fantasy Battles my inititial interest is in the High Elfs. The combo of bow, spear, cavalry and chariots in two flavors has a good link to one of my first ever Ancient Armies (Indian).
